Hire questions, answered

It depends on the machine, and the rule comes from WorkSafe Victoria rather than from us.

  • Scissor lifts and vertical mast lifts — no high risk work licence. WorkSafe Victoria states that you “don’t need a high risk work licence to operate earthmoving equipment (eg excavator) or a scissor lift”.
  • Boom lifts with a boom under 11 metres — no high risk work licence.
  • Boom lifts with a boom of 11 metres or more — the operator must hold a Class 24 boom-type elevating work platform licence (code WP).
  • Forklifts — a high risk work licence is required: Class 28 forklift truck (code LF), or Class 29 order-picking forklift truck (code LO).

A licence is not the whole story. Every elevating work platform must be operated by a trained, competent operator whether or not a licence class applies to it.

The EWPA Yellow Card is industry accreditation, not a legal licence — the two are often confused. WorkSafe Victoria’s guidance is that an elevating work platform “must be operated by a trained, competent operator” and that proof of competency “is best achieved through accredited industry training”.

In practice most Victorian sites ask to see a Yellow Card even for machines that need no licence, so it is worth holding one before you arrive on site.

Day and week rates for every machine are in the table above, including GST.

A week never costs seven times a day. Across our hire fleet a weekly rate works out between about 2.3 and 4 times the daily rate, so the longer the hire runs, the less each day costs.

Delivery and pick-up are quoted separately, based on the size of the machine and the distance from our Dandenong South depot.
